10/2/2024 Indonesia (International Christian Concern) — The Indonesian Christian Youth Movement (GAMKI) of South Tangerang City expressed its dismay over the recent rejection of a permit for the establishment of the Kanaan Jawa Church (GKJ) in Pondok Karya, Pondok Aren district, South Tangerang.
The incident occurred on Sunday, Sept. 29, when banners rejecting the church’s construction were displayed on the church’s land.
Although the building permit had been issued, residents said an unidentified individual only installed the banners of rejection that morning. The posting of the banners surprised and saddened residents and GKJ administrators, who have had mutual respect for some time. The church had previously invited residents to their activities. The banners are seen as a form of religious intolerance.
GAMKI also highlighted the Joint Regulation of the Minister of Religion and the Minister of Home Affairs Number 8 and 9 of 2006 concerning the Establishment of Houses of Worship. These regulations, often used by intolerant groups to obstruct the construction of church buildings in various regions, must be revised to prevent future abuse.
